Forecasting Agricultural output using Space, Agro-meteorological and Land based observation (FASAL) R&D

This work aims at developing techniques for discrimination of crops such as cotton, maize, jowar, groundnut, pulses and finger millet and their acreage and production forecasting using AWiFS and RISAT data.  The study area for pulses included Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Gadag, Bagalkote, Raichur and Yagdir districts; Davanagere, Haveri, Belgaum, Bellary and Chitradurga for maize.  Geo-referencing of multi-date satellite image, generation of NDVI images, development of spectral-temporal profiles, collection of ground truth data and discrimination of pulses from other crops and area estimation of pulses were undertaken.  The NDVI values of red gram in the months from October to mid-February are distinctly higher than that of jowar, paddy and bengal gram facilitating discrimination of red gram from other crops.
